CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KGAN) — After facing a small set back, the 12th Avenue Dog Park opened its gates in downtown Cedar Rapids.
The park was originally planned to open back on July 12. But, that opening was postponed to to allow sod to settle more. On Friday, city leaders celebrated its opening there with a ribbon cutting.
City leaders said the park is a great space for pets and their owners to connect with each other.
Hashim Taylor, the director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Cedar Rapids, attended the 12th Avenue Dog Park opening.
“This is a great opportunity to have an urban downtown park,” Taylor said. “We're having so many residences pop up and we felt there was a need to have a dog park in this location. So, this is great. This will be an addition to our system. Right now, we have two that is currently further out. But for the most part, this is nice to have downtown with all these new residences, walkable, and for people to mingle and interact.”
The 12th Avenue Dog Park is on the 400 block of 12th Avenue Southeast near the Newbo City Market.
Taylor said the parks and recreation department is in the process of planning another dog park near the former Jones Golf Course.
The dog park needs about 15 acres of land near the former Jones Golf Course. Contract bids for that project are expected to out sometime this fall.
