In a first, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation launched Mumbai’s first scientific and environment-friendly cremation facility for deceased small stray and pet animals at Malad’s Cattle Pond Office. The civic body is also slated to introduce a mortuary for small pets at the same location.
Catering to funerals of small animals such as pet dogs, cats and strays, the service can be availed by people daily between 10 am and 6 pm. Civic officials have said that the services will be made available free of charge.

Situated in Malad’s Evershine Nagar, the facility employs a PNG (piped natural gas) based cremation technology to ensure that the process is environmentally friendly. “To avail of the pet cremation service, one needs to submit a death certificate issued by a municipal or registered private veterinary officer. If you own a pet dog, you must have a dog license from BMC,” read a bulletin released on Friday.
In case of animal lovers, the civic body has stated that they must present an identity card issued by the Wildlife Board of India.
For the record, in July, a new mobile crematorium facility for pet animals was started in the suburban belt of Mumbai. The pyre of the mobile crematorium had been set up inside a van which has been acquired through an NGO, Happy Buds Foundation, and the initiative has been backed by Tejasvee Abhishekh Ghosalkar, former Shiv Sena corporator. Ghosalkar said that while pet animals will be cremated at a nominal charge, stray animals will be cremated free of cost.
