COBB COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A horrific fire tore through a Cobb County home early Friday morning, leaving one woman dead and her family members injured.

Neighbors rushed to help as flames shot high into the air from the house, located on Oakland Drive near Marietta.

Jayne Bachman, who lives up the street, could hear the pop and crackle of the fire.

“It was a very terrifying sound. It’s heartbreaking,” Bachman said. “I didn’t know her, but she was a neighbor. This is a tight-knit community.”

Fire officials confirmed that the family — a husband, wife and their two adult sons — managed to escape the home safely. However, the woman ran back into the home in an attempt to save the family dog.

“My friends and I said we would’ve done the same thing. We understand,” said Bachman.

Upon arrival, emergency crews were met with heavy smoke and flames engulfing the structure. Despite firefighters' fast response, the house was fully consumed by flames by the time they arrived just after 3 a.m. Friday.

The woman was later discovered dead just outside the home under the collapsed roof of the carport.

“Our firefighters worked hard to put out the fire and rescue the victims,” Chief Justin Green of Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services said.

The husband and two sons were taken to a hospital and are recovering from minor injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.

Three firefighters were also hurt while battling the fire. Two were taken to the hospital for treatment and are expected to recover.

Fire officials said the fire appears to be accidental, but they’re still working to determine the exact cause.
