Parvovirus, a highly contagious virus affecting dogs has been detected in Cockermouth and the surrounding areas, with West Cumbrian veterinary group Millcroft urging people in the area to make sure their dogs are vaccinated against the virus.

In a post on social media, Millcroft Veterinary Group said: “Unfortunately we have confirmed cases of Parvovirus local to Cockermouth and surrounding areas.

“Parvo is a highly contagious virus causing bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and lethargy and sadly it can often be fatal despite intensive treatment.

“Be assured if you come in yearly for booster vaccines, your dogs chance of contracting Parvo is minimal. Unvaccinated dogs, particularly puppies or older dogs, are most at risk.

“If you are unsure of your dogs vaccination status (or have other questions), please contact us by EMAIL to reception@millcroftvets.co.uk stating your name, address and pet name and we will advise you according to our records.”
