EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – With wintry conditions comes special considerations for pets and cold temperatures.
Every pet is different, but with hazards like freezing temperatures, or sidewalk conditions, there are some things to plan for.
For dogs, take into account size and breed a 5 lb. chihuahua will have a much more difficult time in the Wisconsin winter than a 50 lb. husky. However, paw protection is important for all breeds. For example, ice salt can be harsh, using booties or paw wax can protect those sensitive paws.
Otherwise, think about indoor activities.
“One thing that I love telling people is 15 minutes of mental stimulation is equivalent to a 30 minute outdoor activity so investing in some enrichment activities for your dog is huge,” Addie Erdmann, the marketing and development coordinator at the Eau Claire Community Humane Association, said.
A good rule of thumb is that if temperatures are below freezing, it's best to limit outdoor activity for dogs. As for cats, if they usually spend their days indoors, keep them there.
