COLUMBIA, Miss. (WDAM) – Some young students in Columbia wrapped up a two-week period of reading about pets by meeting some dogs that could use a good home.
First-graders at Columbia Primary School got the chance to hug and pet some puppies from Columbia Police Department’s Animal Control and Rescue Friday afternoon.
The students are finishing a literary unit on animal adoption and caring for cats and dogs.
“I hope that through these first graders, we can educate our community better on the responsibilities of owning a pet and bring some awareness to our community about the pets that are being abandoned,” said Amy Johnson, a first grade teacher at Columbia Primary School.
Some of the students said they’ve learned how to be a good pet owner.
“We have to feed them and take care of them and we have to give them water and take them on a walk,“ said Karter James, a seven-year-old student.
“(You have to) feed it, play with it, take it for a walk,” said Henry Foxworth, a six-year-old student at the school.
The children also donated lots of food and other items to help out the pets at the CPD Animal Control and Rescue.
