Since our eyes are frequently referred to as the windows to the soul, we as committed pet owners need to take extra care to ensure the general health and happiness of our dogs and cats. This care goes beyond providing regular meals and playtime. Pets may experience a variety of ocular problems that could affect their overall comfort and vision, ranging from hereditary predispositions to environmental influences. 

Typical Eye Problems in Cats and Dogs

During an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Dharmraj P. Raibole, a medical advisor at Entod Pharmaceuticals and a veterinary surgeon and radiologist at Pet Cure and Care Surgical Centre, shared a list of often identified eye disorders in pets.

Conjunctivitis: Conjunctivitis, whether bacterial or viral, can cause inflammation of the cornea. Allergies, trauma, and the feline herpesvirus are a few possible causes of infections.

Glaucoma: This excruciating ailment, which is characterized by bulging, touch sensitivity, and fluid accumulation, is brought on by fluid buildup in and around the eyes.

Cataracts: These hazy or white patches in the eyes prevent light from reaching the retina.

The formation of the protective layer inside the eyelids and on the surface of the eyes is hampered by dry eye disease. Some breeds—such as Cocker Spaniels—might be more prone to dry eye issues than others.

Cherry Eye: Notable swelling is the hallmark of cherry eye, which focuses on the third eyelid.

Corneal Ulcers: There are a number of potential causes for these ulcers, including glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis, and trauma. Breeds with brachycephaly can be more vulnerable.

According to Dr. Dharmraj P. Raibole, “It is imperative that these issues be addressed as soon as possible because if left untreated, eye problems can result in pain, decreased activity, and social disengagement.” Maintaining good eye health in pets requires prioritizing preventive actions as well as obtaining professional aid upon symptom emergence.
