HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Dozens of community members gathered Wednesday evening in front of the Page County courthouse to honor Rosie, the German Shepherd who died after Page County deputies found her suffering from malnourishment.

Dogs Deserve Bette Blue Ridge, an organization dedicated to taking dogs off chains and pulling at-risk dogs from shelters, organized the vigil to unite members mourning Rosie’s loss. Locals had the opportunity to grieve and listen to music, and words of encouragement were shared on the rainy night. The vigil was held the day before Sarah’s maiden, Rosie’s owner, is to make their first court appearance on Nov.20 after being charged with a misdemeanor related to Rosie’s death.

Kimberly Hawk, President of Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge, says members of the organization will attend the court hearing to show their support for Rosie.

“We have to be the voice for the animals-they don’t have their own voice. If you see a chained dog- if you see a dog who is completely emaciated- who’s completely sick, call animal control, call your local authorities,” said Hawk.

An image spread on social media in late October showed a sick Rosie with signs of severe malnourishment. Rosie was then taken for medical treatment but died a few days later. A previous photo shows a healthy Rosie from back in August, and this is what is bringing the community to advocate.

“To see those photos and know that she suffered, we just all want to be her voice now – and we want justice for Rosie,” said Hawk.

Hawk says the overall message Wednesday evening was not just to honor Rosie but to bring awareness to the mistreatment of canines everywhere.

“No animal should have to pay the price [they] have the most unconditional love, and no one should have to endure this,” said Leslie Miranda, a pet owner and attendee at the vigil.
