Dan Schachner advocates for informed pet adoption and proper nutrition

4.1 MILLION DOGS AND CATS ARE ADOPTED FROM SHELTERS EACH YEAR: HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT COMPANION FOR YOUR FAMILY

Puppybowl Referee and Pet Rescue Expert Shares His Tips for Pet Rescue, Health and Finding the Right Food

More than 6.3 million dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, and they all need a new, loving home. While it’s easy to jump at the cutest dog or a certain breed, it’s important to make an informed decision and learn about a pet’s personality and energy level. You’ll want to choose a furry friend that fits your lifestyle and can easily adapt to home life with you.

Once you’ve adopted your four-legged pal, it’s time to focus on health and feeding the right food. The truth is that not all pet food is the same, and it's important to find brands that offer wholesome ingredients like real meat, fish and vegetables.

Dan Schachner is an expert in pet safety, pet rescue, and pet fostering, is best known as The Puppybowl Referee, a role he has held for the past 14 years. Dan is also the host for the Kitten Halftime Show, a showcase for adoptable rescue cats which airs with Puppybowl each year and the host and narrator animal rescue shows on Discovery and on social media, which include “Freedom Flight” “Tough Mutt to Crack” and the live adoption show “Give a Dog A Home.” When he is not hosting tv shows and animal sporting events, Dan is also the go-to expert on dog and cat trivia, having appeared regularly on the Today Show to quiz Hoda and Jenna on their canine and feline knowledge. A long-time advocate for dog and cat rescue, Dan and his family continue to foster dogs and cats from rescues all over the northeast, providing a stop for animals who are crowded out of the shelters and in need of a forever home. To date, Dan has fostered 37 dogs, 5 cats, and is proud to report all have been adopted.
