MADISON (WKOW) — Dane County Humane Society said it is opening its doors to 10 cats from a South Carolina shelter to help make room for lost animals after Hurricane Helene tore through communities in the southeast.
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is partnering with Greater Good Charities to fly about 45 dogs and 25 cats from Lucky Dog’s South Carolina campus to Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release.
Spokesperson Lisa Bernard said transferring these animals gives Lucky Dog space to welcome a transport of pets from Florida Urgent Rescue that were in shelters before the storm or given up by families afterwards.
“Moving these adoptable animals makes critical space for pets separated from their families after Helene slammed the southeast,” said Lisa Bernard, DCHS’s development & communications supervisor. “Our hearts go out to the communities affected by Helene. By participating in this effort, DCHS is helping keep these lost pets close to home so they have a chance of being reunited with their loved ones.”
DCHS will provide shelter and care for the 10 cats arriving on Wednesday while they wait to find new loving families.
