Cane toads have become a growing threat to pets across Florida, prompting officials to urge immediate removal and, in many cases, extermination of these invasive creatures. These large, squat toads are especially dangerous to cats and dogs due to the thick toxin they release when threatened, which can prove fatal in as little as 15 minutes.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed that these toxins must be ingested to be harmful, meaning pets that lick, bite, or mouth the toad are most at risk. Common in urban areas, cane toads are often mistaken for harmless native species, but their shield-like heads and lack of sticky toe pads help set them apart.

“They don’t climb, but they love water and urban spaces,” said Lindsey Floyd from ‘Pesky Varmints.’ “And each female cane toad can lay up to 30,000 eggs—twice a year.”

If you spot a cane toad on your property, the FWC not only permits but encourages humane euthanization, as the species is invasive. Paige Konger-Henry, co-owner of Tarpon Springs Aquarium, recommends using a dustpan or gloved hand to capture the toad and then placing it in the freezer—a method she calls “freezer land.”

But there’s a catch. Florida’s native southern toads should not be harmed. Experts advise looking for distinguishing features like the cane toad’s broad, flat head, which resembles a shield, to avoid mistaken identity.

These toxic amphibians have primarily been found in southern Florida, but sightings have increased around Central Florida and the Tampa Bay Area.

Toad-proofing your yard is another crucial step. Officials recommend:

  • Trimming shrubs and clearing ground-level clutter
  • Filling in holes around foundations
  • Removing outdoor food sources (like pet food bowls)
  • Eliminating standing water from leaky hoses or bowls

If your dog or cat comes in contact with a cane toad, wipe their mouth immediately with a wet cloth and head straight to the vet. Early intervention is critical.

Security video footage shows a man dragging the small dog by its back legs up the street, scraping the poor thing's nose along the pavement. That was just the beginning. Sign the petition to demand justice for this sweet pup!

Despite their deadly toxin, some predators like certain birds and even chickens are surprisingly unaffected.

Cane toads aren’t just a nuisance—they’re a genuine hazard to Florida’s pets. Spotting one on your lawn could be a life-or-death situation for your furry companion.
