I have three animals at my house. I have a 12-year-old cat, an 8-month-old dog, and a kitten, maybe 8 weeks old. While each of their personalities is drastically different, they each share one thing in common: they were rescued from the streets. Adding a new member to your household is a big step and may seem daunting at first, but if you ask me, it’s something that will bring you a tremendous amount of joy.
Free Pet Adoptions in Daviess County, Indiana
If you’re looking to adopt a dog or cat, there are plenty of places you can visit in the tri-state to grow your family. One of those places is the City of Washington Animal Control and Adoption Facility, which is currently the only animal shelter in Daviess County, Indiana. In fact, now is the perfect time to pay a visit to the shelter, as adoption fees for dogs and cats are now covered through Friday, August 16, 2024. The fees are being taken care of by Daviess County Friends for Animals, which is a nonprofit pet adoption service.
Growing Abandoned Animal Population Sparks Dire Need
Daviess County Friends for Animals (FFA) stepped up to cover adoptions due to the growing abandoned animal population in the community. FFA took to social media on Saturday, August 10, to ask the community for help, whether by adoption, fostering, or even through a monetary donation. The organization posted the following to social media:
The abandoned animal population is out of control. Currently FFA and the Washington Shelter has over 40 cats and 30 dogs that are in desperate need of homes. There are so many cats coming in that some will be put down to make room. Help us save these babies through adoption or fostering.
After posting the message to social media, the community rallied to support the cause. In fact, by that evening, eight cats and three dogs had found their forever homes. That said, the shelter is still seeking homes for the many, many animals that are still waiting to be adopted. The City of Washington Animal Control and Adoption Facility is located at 213 S. 200 W. in Washington, Indiana. Hours and contact information can be found on the facility’s Facebook page.
