Rescuing dogs, especially ones in heartbreaking situations, is filled with both sadness and relief. This idea resonates deeply with many animal rescuers. The initial encounter with abandoned or stray animals often brings a profound sense of sorrow over the extent of their suffering and a desire to aid them all. However, there is also immense relief when a rescue is successful and a puppy is secure and poised for a brighter future with a new family. Such moments are cherished deeply, and in this article, we explore a poignant rescue story about a dog who narrowly escaped euthanasia and was given a second chance by a compassionate individual.

It’s increasingly common for pets to be euthanized due to the high costs of medical care. This was nearly the fate of Gregory, a Beagle, who was close to being euthanized before Joe Kirk stepped in to save him. Joe rescued him just two days before the scheduled euthanasia. This rescue was particularly fortunate because Joe and his wife, Schenley, operate a non-profit called Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio. Their organization focuses on rehoming neglected animals and providing foster care for older, often unadoptable dogs.

Schenley shared on Facebook: “Gregory is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE!” Although Gregory was diagnosed as Heartworm Positive, the Kirks were ready to treat him. “He is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!” Schenley assured.

After receiving the necessary medical care, Gregory didn’t have to wait long on the adoption list. A family soon expressed their desire to adopt him, and before long, he settled into his forever home, enjoying life with his new human family and dog siblings. Schenley beautifully articulated the impact of their work when interviewed by Bored Panda: “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more. One more dog is safe and will have all of the love and respect that they are so deserving of.”

She continued, “One more dog will be properly fed and receive needed veterinary care. One more dog will have a loving forever home.” For Schenley and Joe, there is no greater satisfaction or more fulfilling achievement than knowing they have provided a safe and loving environment for one more dog.
