Shelters said many dogs get scared by the fireworks and end up trying to run away and wiggling out of their collars out of fear.

DENVER — The Denver Animal Shelter said they took in 87 dogs between July 3 and July 7.

The loud booms and lights from fireworks and firecrackers can make pets frightened, anxious and possibly destructive. Denver Animal Protection said it's common over the holiday for even otherwise mid-mannered pets to try and run away from home.

On July 5, the Denver Animal Shelter said they had more than double the number of dog intakes compared to earlier in the week.

This is the number of dogs that ended up in the shelter each day:

  • July 3: 13 dogs
  • July 4: 13 dogs
  • July 5: 32 dogs
  • July 6: 17 dogs
  • July 7: 12 dogs

In June, an average of 18 dogs were taken in by the shelter each Friday. That means the 32 dogs that wound up at the shelter on Friday, July 5 was 78% more than the average Friday.

The animal shelter will attempt to reunite dogs with their owners as long as they can be identified. Lost pets brought in without identification will be held five days before they are put up for adoption.

Anyone who lost their pet should check the Denver Animal Shelter website and immediately come to the shelter or call 720-913-1311 if they see the dog online.

Pet owners can also visit the Denver Animal Shelter to get their pet microchipped or licensed, which gives them the best chance of being reunited with their owners if they ever get lost.
