Is is just me or does it seem to be more skunks running around in New York? I've seen many of them “sleeping” in or by the road when I drive by. That's bad enough but it's even worse when Pepe Le Pew meets up with Pluto or Goofy.

I know they say that Goofy isn't a dog but that is a discussion for another day. So what do you do if your furry friend has had a not-so-pleasant encounter with a skunk? Fear not, we have the answer on the safest way to get rid of that skunk smell.

Lassie comes bounding back home with that unmistakable skunk odor behind him. You don't need to stock up on tomato juice because over-the-counter products like Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover can work like magic.

But, if you're caught off guard, don't sweat it! Here's a DIY solution to de-skunk your dog:

Step 1: Keep Your Dog Outside

First things first, keep your dog outdoors to prevent the skunk scent from getting into your home. If their eyes seem irritated or red, rinse them immediately with cool water to stop any discomfort.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

Whip up a skunk-stop-smelling concoction! Grab 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (at any pharmacy), 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish washing soap. Wash your dog with this solution, and avoid their eyes at all costs. No peroxide? Use vinegar diluted with water as a substitute.

Step 3: Clean and Rinse

Massage the mixture through your dog's fur, don't leave it on for too long to avoid any bleaching of their fur. Rinse them thoroughly to remove the skunk odor.

Step 4: Shampoo and Dry

After that, wash your dog with pet shampoo and make sure to rinse them well. After the cleanup, give your dog a towel dry and put them in a warm, sunny spot to prevent them from getting chilly.

Owner Cleanup

If you found yourself in the line of fire and you got skunked too, don't worry! You can freshen up your clothes by washing them with regular laundry detergent mixed with half a cup of baking soda.

There you go – the ultimate guide to de-skunking your dog during New York Skunk Season. Remember, accidents happen, but with a little know-how, you and your four-legged friend can wash that skunk smell away and feeling fresh. in no time. Wishing you a skunk-free and scent-sational season ahead!
