Do Kangaroos Hate Dogs? Here’s Why They Will Drown Your Canine Friend

Kangaroos are not only cute and iconic animals of Australia, but also potentially dangerous predators that can harm your dog.

Some kangaroos have been observed to lure dogs into water and try to drown them, using their powerful hind legs and claws to inflict serious injuries. Here are some tips on how to prevent and deal with kangaroo attacks on your canine companion.

The best way to prevent kangaroo attacks is to avoid areas where they are known to live and feed, such as grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands.

Kangaroos are most active at dawn and dusk, so avoid walking your dog during these times. If you encounter a kangaroo, do not approach it or try to feed it, as this may provoke it to defend its territory or food source.

Keep your dog on a leash at all times when walking in areas where kangaroos may be present. T

his will prevent your dog from chasing or barking at the kangaroo, which may trigger an attack. If your dog is off-leash and runs towards a kangaroo, call it back immediately and try to distract it with a toy or a treat.

According to Wildlife Victoria's CEO Lisa Palma, kangaroos are wild animals and as such will view human beings, and dogs, as predators.

She encouraged dog owners to keep their pets on a lead in areas where kangaroos were known to frequent. “If they are off-lead, [ensure] that they are responsive to your command if a situation such as this arises,” she said.

Know How to React if a Kangaroo Attacks Your Dog

If a kangaroo attacks your dog, do not panic or intervene physically, as this may put you and your dog in more danger. Instead, try to scare the kangaroo away by making loud noises, throwing stones or sticks, or spraying water. If the kangaroo retreats, take your dog and leave the area as quickly as possible.

If the kangaroo lures your dog into water, do not follow them, as the kangaroo may try to drown you as well. Instead, try to coax your dog out of the water by calling its name, offering a treat, or throwing a toy. If your dog manages to escape, check it for injuries and seek veterinary attention if needed.

As a defensive tactic, kangaroos often lead their predator (dog) into the water where they can stand while being submerged in the water.

This is a common strategy used by kangaroos to escape from predators such as dingoes or foxes.

Kangaroos have been known to attack dogs, leading to serious injuries and even death.

These attacks are often a result of territorial behavior or the instinct to protect their young.

Report Kangaroo Attacks and Educate Yourself About Kangaroo Behavior

If you or your dog are attacked by a kangaroo, report the incident to the local authorities or wildlife rescue groups, as they may be able to relocate the kangaroo or warn other people about the danger.

You can also contact the RSPCA or other animal welfare organisations for advice on how to deal with kangaroo attacks.

To better understand why kangaroos may attack dogs, educate yourself about their natural behaviour and ecology.

Kangaroos are social animals that live in groups called mobs, and they may see dogs as threats or competitors for food and water.

Kangaroos are also herbivores that need to drink water regularly, and they may use water sources as a defensive strategy against predators.

By learning more about kangaroos, you can appreciate their role in the ecosystem and coexist with them peacefully.
