Dog adoptions are free in Stanislaus County this week after the animal services agency responded to a number of recent hoarding cases.
The agency said from April 1 to April 7, donors covered the adoption fees for every adoptable dog.
Each dog will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, the agency said.
In March, Stanislaus County Animal Services responded to a few major dog hoarding cases. On Mar. 19, the agency rescued 86 dogs from one home in Ceres. The week prior, the agency had rescued 38 chihuahuas from another Ceres home.
The shelter can comfortably house 183 pets. At one point last month, the shelter housed 327 dogs. As of Friday, the shelter housed 239 dogs, still exceeding the maximum capacity.
“We recognize the importance of finding permanent homes for these dogs, and we are grateful for the generosity of our donors in making this event possible,” said Vaughn Maurice, the executive director of the animal services agency.
“We are all part of a compassionate community that cares for its furry residents,” Maurice said.
