Lindsay Arliss, a dog behaviour and training expert from Woodgreen Pets Charity, has shared insights confirming that dogs indeed experience love similarly to humans. Dogs have their own distinctive, sometimes whimsical ways of showing affection.

Classic demonstrations of a dog's love include an enthusiastic greeting at the door, barking joyfully, or tail-wagging with vigour. Lindsay said: “They may even whine to show how happy they are to see you.” She noted that dogs might lean on their owners, offer licks, or even nab a piece of clothing to show their love.

She said: “Dogs experience the same flush of a hormone called oxytocin when shown affection – just like we do when we're around someone we care about.”

Research involving MRI scans has revealed that dogs' brains become active when they catch the scent of their owner. But how can you tell if you're the apple of your dog's eye?

Lindsay said: “If they follow you from room to room, they probably adore you.”

She added that some dogs express their fondness by resting their heads on their chosen human or presenting them with toys for playtime, reports the Express.

The way a dog gazes at you can also be revealing – a soft look and leisurely blinking signify their version of a loving stare.

When it comes to breeds that are particularly known for their affectionate nature, Lindsay points out that while every dog is unique, certain breeds stand out for their loving disposition.

The Golden Retriever takes the crown, renowned for its gentle temperament and unwavering loyalty.

Pugs are known for their loving nature, often inseparable from their owners and content in the comfort of their laps.

A similar attachment can be observed in Dachshunds, which form profound connections with their families and frequently follow their owners around the home.

Greyhounds, despite their remarkable speed, are tranquil and loving companions. They make excellent additions to families.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are another breed that exudes affection; however, they do not cope well with extended periods of solitude.

According to Lindsay, while every dog boasts a unique personality, certain breeds exhibit a stronger predisposition towards affection.

She added: “Every dog is different, no matter the breed. But if you're looking for a pup that wears their heart on their paw, these breeds are a great place to start.”
