Dog, cat food recalled due to Salmonella, Listeria risk

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Blue Ridge Beef has issued a voluntary recall of its Kitten Mix and Puppy Mix products due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria, reports the FDA. The recall affects 1,080 pounds of Kitten Mix Lot # N26 0114 and 1,380 pounds of Puppy Mix Lot # N25 1230. The lot numbers are stamped on the clips at the end of the chubs or bags.

The contamination poses a risk to both animals and humans. Pets consuming the affected products may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can also be carriers, potentially spreading the infection to other animals or humans. Pet owners are advised to contact their veterinarians if their pets show these symptoms after consuming the recalled products.

The products were distributed between January 3 and January 24, 2025, and were sold primarily in retail stores across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

The recall follows a customer complaint of animal illness, prompting the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to collect samples on March 20, 2025. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture notified Blue Ridge Beef on April 1, 2025, that the products tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria.

Consumers are urged to return the products to the place of purchase or destroy them in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife. The recalled products should not be sold, donated, or fed to pets or other animals. Additionally, pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers should be washed and sanitized.
