As a result of its wounds, the dog was euthanized, police said Monday.
“Our hearts go out to the family of this dog,” said acting Falls Church police chief Jiwan Chhetri. “Pets are members of the family, and we grieve along with them.”
After the attack, witnesses took down a license plate number and gave it to authorities, police said.
On Monday, police said, a member of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police took a man into custody after making a traffic stop near Dulles Airport.
The license plate number proved critically important, according to police.
They said the man was being taken to the detention center in Loudoun County, where Dulles is located. Falls Church police said they expected the man to be extradited to their jurisdiction.
No motive was given for the attack on the dog.
