New Delhi: Travelling with dogs has become an integral part of many families’ lives. Whether it’s a holiday getaway or a necessary trip, pets are often considered as much a part of the family as any other member, and leaving them behind is simply not an option. However, while many pets enjoy the adventure of a road trip, the experience can become stressful if not planned properly. Just as you would prepare for your own needs, ensuring that your pet’s needs are met is crucial for a smooth journey. By planning ahead, you can make sure the trip is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for both you and your furry companion.

When it comes to car travel, especially over long distances, a bit of preparation goes a long way. It’s not just about packing their favourite toy or blanket—though those help too—it’s about ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey. It’s easy to assume that everything your pet might need can be picked up along the way, but this assumption can lead to unnecessary stress if you find yourself unprepared.

6 Tips for safe road trips with dogs

To help keep your pet safe and healthy during the trip, follow these simple yet essential steps:

  1. First and foremost, secure your pet properly in the car. Dogs and cats should be restrained with a harness or kept in a carrier. This is vital for their safety in case of an accident or sudden stop, and it prevents them from becoming a distraction to the driver.
  2. It might be tempting to let your dog enjoy the breeze by sticking its head out of the window, but this can be dangerous. They could be hit by debris or, worse, be thrown from the vehicle if an unexpected situation arises.
  3. Regular breaks are a must. Stop every few hours to allow your pet to stretch, relieve themselves, and stay hydrated. When outside the vehicle, always keep them on a leash, and make sure they’re wearing a collar with an identification tag, just in case.
  4. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even if it’s in the shade. The interior temperature can rise sharply in minutes, leading to the risk of dehydration or heatstroke.
  5. Stick to your pet’s normal feeding schedule as much as possible and avoid giving them human food. Their food should be properly stored: keep kibble and treats sealed in a cool, dry place, and refrigerate any opened canned food if it’s not all served at once.
  6. When you reach your destination, remember that the new environment will be full of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells for your pet. To prevent them from getting lost or running away, keep them on a leash when outside.

By taking the time to plan and follow these precautions, you can ensure that your journey is not only stress-free but also a pleasant experience for both you and your pet.
