Dog killed by 2 coyotes in homeowner’s northwest Las Vegas backyard

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A coyote sighting over the weekend led to the death of a homeowner’s 12-year-old dog in the northwest Las Vegas valley.

Jennifer Duran lives in the northwest valley and told 8 News Now she’s in mourning after two coyotes invaded her backyard on Sunday and killed Zimba, her pomeranian.

“Early in the morning, a friend of mine came to the front door.
He said Zimba was lying in the backyard in the grass and I just went running.
He had two puncture holes in his side,” she said.

The whole incident was caught on security camera.

Jennifer believes it happened after Zimba went outside through the doggy door to go to the bathroom, something he would normally do at night.

“Two coyotes came up over the back wall and got in the yard and the dog came out and drank water in the pool and walked over to the grass to do his business and that’s when the coyotes got it,” she added.

Since the horrific incident, Duran said she is relieved that they didn’t come into the house and hurt their other four pets.

“It’s a high wall we have in our backyard and they scaled up over it and got in the yard so I’m just saying lock your dog doors and close them up at night,” she added.

Reports of coyote sightings are up all across the valley in more rural areas.
Jennifer acknowledged that they live in coyote territory.

“It’s a fact that we took over where they live.
That’s why this is happening because we keep building and building and we are pushing them further out,” she said.
