A man accused of breaking into a Canberra pound to get his dog after authorities had seized it has been granted bail.

Kyle Martin Hiscox, a 34-year-old from Waramanga, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday (22 January) after he had been charged with burglary.

ACT Policing said on Sunday (21 January), police had received a report of an alleged overnight burglary and missing dog from the ACT Government Domestic Animal Services facility in Symonston.

It is alleged that at around 11 pm on Saturday (20 January), power tools were used to damage locks and access a cage where a seven-month-old dog was housed.

Following a review of facility records and closed-circuit television footage, police said they identified Mr Hiscox.

Police and Domestic Animal Services officers went to his home on Sunday and allegedly found the stolen dog.

“The dog had previously been seized from the man for non-compliance with ownership requirements,” police allege.

“No other dogs were taken during this incident.”

On Monday, the court heard the lawyers had agreed bail could be granted on conditions and that the charge had been explained to Mr Hiscox.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston granted bail, including on the condition he not be within 100 metres of the animal facility unless authorised by Domestic Animal Services.

The matter will return to court on 12 February. No plea was entered.
