Keeping your lawn pristine while also being a proud dog owner might seem like an impossible task, but it's achievable. By implementing the right strategies, you can have a thriving lawn and a happy, healthy dog.

Timothy Greene, an expert from iCANLAWN.com, said: “A lush and resilient lawn is within reach for every dog owner – it's about choosing the right tactics that balance the joy of a vibrant garden with the playfulness of our canine companions.”

Select the right lawn seed

When choosing grass seed, Mr Greene advises opting for hardy varieties. “This lays the groundwork for a robust lawn that can withstand your pets' energetic playtime and antics,” he said. “Look for mixtures labelled as ‘hardwearing' or ‘durable'.

“Very strong grass seeds, such as Tough Stuff Lush Lawn, for instance, not only withstand heavy use but also add a touch of luxury to your lawn. It's a perfect choice for dog owners seeking both durability and aesthetics.”

Use pet-friendly lawn feed

“For a pet-safe lawn, use a feed made up of natural ingredients rich in essential nutrients for year-round care,” Mr Greene recommends, suggesting gardeners consider something like All Natural Nutriboost. Apply it in warmer weather, starting from May onwards, to allow the natural ingredients to break down and work their magic on your lawn,” he said.

Address dog urine burns

Mr Greene has a straightforward solution to tackle those pesky patches on your lawn caused by dog urine. He advises: “After your pet relieves themselves, promptly water the area.

“This not only prevents burning but also helps to dilute the nitrogen in their urine, promoting a healthier and greener lawn. Make it a habit, and you'll see the difference.

“To revive a lawn resembling a patchwork quilt due to dog urine or digging, Mr Greene recommends the following steps. Begin by carefully digging out the damaged grass, ensuring you reach the roots.

“Next, fill the excavated area with quality topsoil, levelling it with the surrounding lawn using a rake.” He continued: “Sprinkle those tough grass seeds on the patch. This specially formulated seed mix promotes quick and robust growth, blending seamlessly with your existing grass.

“Lastly, rake in the seed gently and water the patched area daily for at least three weeks, avoiding watering on rainy days. This consistent care ensures proper establishment and a uniform, vibrant lawn.”
