Dog recovering after being shot in the face and left to suffer in North Texas

According to the Humane Society of North Texas, the dog will soon be ready for adoption.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A 2-year-old dog is on the road to recovery after being shot in the face and left to suffer in North Texas.

According to the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), the dog, Twiggy, showed up at the facility as part of a negotiated release on Nov. 4.

HSNT said she came severely emaciated, covered in fleas and parasites, and battling heartworm and whipworm. During her initial intake exam, HSNT's medical team found significant swelling under Twiggy's jaw, however, there were no visible external wounds or injuries inside her mouth.

According to HSNT, because of a severe upper respiratory infection, the medical team could not sedate Twiggy to further investigate the swelling. So, she was given antibiotics and closely monitored.

HSNT said once Twiggy was healthy enough to undergo sedation, radiographs revealed a terrible discovery: Twiggy had been shot in the face.

According to the shelter, a bullet and tooth fragment had been lodged in Twiggy's jaw for weeks, causing her pain and suffering. Thankfully, HSNT's veterinary team was able to remove the bullet and fragments in surgery.

HSNT said throughout Twiggy's recovery, she has shown so much love and despite the immense trauma, she is still a gentle, sweet and trusting companion.

“Twiggy's story is a powerful reminder of HSNT's commitment to helping pets who would otherwise never have a chance,” HSNT said in a news release. “Without intervention, Twiggy would not have survived. Thanks to HSNT and our supporters, she now has a second chance at life and is waiting to bring love and joy to a family who will cherish her as she deserves.”
