Dog rescued after being found in garbage bag thrown in dumpster

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) – The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the person responsible for leaving a poodle in a dumpster.

The 10-year-old poodle was found in a garbage bag filled with dirty diapers and trash. Now, the poodle is on the road to recovery and is now being taken care of by the people at Noah’s Arks Rescue. They’ve decided to name him “Treasure.”

On the rescue’s website, staff at say that Treasure is safe and needs medical care. They also say despite his condition, Treasure is friendly, giving kisses to the team taking care of him.

A few days ago, Treasure was found in this dumpster at a DHEC building in Burton. An employee heard him crying and called the authorities when they found him.

“He had about two pounds of matted fur. His nails were unkept, cataracts in both eyes. He was transported to Port Royal Veterinary Clinic for treatment,” Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Maj. Angela Viens said.

Maj. Viens says that it was very apparent that Treasure had been severely neglected by his owners, and the sheriff’s office is trying to find them.

“The animal abuse cases that we investigate aren’t typically this severe, where you have a dog or a pet that is presented in such poor care,” she said.

Officials with Beaufort County Animal Services said they’re here to help struggling pet owners. They often see abandoned animals because affordable pet care can be hard to find.

In order to help, they’ve created an application for a judgement-free emergency help application.
