The camera shows the curious dog standing upright, with two feet on the countertop. However, one of its paws brushed against the oven, accidentally turning it on. What caused the fire to spread was the fact that there were a few boxes placed on the oven. They quickly caught fire, causing it to spread.
The second part of the video shows the room engulfed with smoke, as the fire alarm can be heard blaring in the background. The owners woke up when their Apple HomePod sent them a “High Heat” notification.
One of them managed to extinguish the flame before calling the fire department. He was later transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, but no one was injured, said the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The firefighters arrived at the house, and could find “no visible fire or smoke,” but there was “evidence of a fire,” they said. After reviewing home security footage, they found out the unusual cause of the flaming house.
The couple has been temporarily displaced while they rebuild their home. Additionally, a GoFundMe has been started to assist them while they wait for insurance to process their claims.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department took this moment to remind people to have working smoke alarms in their houses, and ensure that combustibles are placed away from the stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your house in the event of a fire.
