The Peruvian Lowland Jungle is full of beauty, wonder, and surprises. For Polar, a Terrier mix with striking white fur, the jungle is a unique and unexpected experience. Exploring the lush lowlands of Madre de Dios alongside his family—including his brown-furred doggy sibling, Calvin—Polar often becomes the center of attention. However, it’s not the locals or fellow hikers who are fascinated by him; it’s the monarch butterflies that turn his peaceful treks into a playful spectacle.
Every time Polar ventures into the jungle, the monarch butterflies, drawn to his snow-white coat, swarm around him in a colorful dance. They flutter excitedly when they spot him through the trees, landing delicately across his back and neck. The orange and black of their wings stand out vividly against his fur, transforming him for a few moments into a living canvas. While their perches are short-lived because Polar quickly shakes them off, it doesn’t take long for the butterflies to return, repeating the cycle throughout his walk.
TikTok user Abychan12 documented this charming phenomenon in several videos, which quickly sparked curiosity among viewers. One user, @karlysol3 (Karly Sol), offered a possible explanation for the butterflies’ behavior: “Butterflies perch on white surfaces. If you ever go to see monarch butterflies in Michoacán, [Mexico], wear white, and you’ll see.” Abichan highlighted the comment, agreeing with the theory and providing Calvin as proof. Unlike Polar, Calvin, with his brown fur, remains entirely unbothered by the butterflies.
Out of their hiking group, Polar remains the sole recipient of the butterflies’ affection. While he doesn’t particularly enjoy being blanketed by his fluttering friends, his unique connection to the monarchs has earned him a lighthearted title: “Polar, guardian of the butterflies,” as Abichan fondly wrote.
Though Polar may not fully appreciate his special bond with the monarch butterflies, his jungle adventures have turned into something truly magical. Every walk is a reminder of how nature, in its own gentle way, finds beauty and connection in the most unexpected places.
Tell Target: Animals Deserve Better!
Target decided to keep selling eggs and pork that come from caged chickens and crated pigs indefinitely despite the pledge made nearly a decade ago to stop using cruel cages and gestation crates. Sign now to urge Target’s CEO to stop supporting animal cruelty.
While Karly Sol’s theory may be correct, do you think there could be another explanation as to why the butterflies are so fond of Polar? Maybe their connection isn’t about his white fur but something else entirely. We’d love to hear your thoughts in our comment section.
Please enjoy these two wonderful videos of Polar and his butterfly friends. The experience really is pure magic!
