For many, keeping pet dogs as part of the household is a cherished tradition, where dogs are seen not merely as animals but as integral members of the family. This practice highlights the deep bond of mutual love, trust, and coexistence. With time, travelling with pet dogs has also gained significant traction. However, did you know there is a region in India where keeping pet dogs or bringing pet dogs while travelling is banned?

India, renowned for its rich biodiversity, sees its people caring for, feeding, and providing emotional support to various creatures. Nevertheless, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, known for its unique ecological characteristics, does not allow dogs. Visitors to Lakshadweep are also prohibited from bringing dogs.

Lakshadweep, also a snake-free region, is the only place in India without dogs. Studies of its flora and fauna confirm the absence of both dogs and snakes on these islands. The local administration continually strives to maintain this status. Consequently, tourists to Lakshadweep must comply with strict regulations, including the ban on dogs.

Despite the absence of dogs, Lakshadweep boasts diverse wildlife. Birds, particularly crows, are plentiful, and Pitti Island houses an important bird sanctuary for the conservation of seabirds. Furthermore, Lakshadweep is home to the Dugong, also known as the ‘sea cow’, a rare and endangered marine mammal.

Located in the Arabian Sea, off India’s west coast, Lakshadweep comprises 36 small islands, covering an area of just 32 square kilometres and housing approximately 64,000 residents. The population is predominantly Muslim (96%), with the remaining 4% consisting of Hindus, Buddhists, and others.

Of the 36 islands, only 10 are inhabited: Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Kadmat, Kilaton, Chetlat, Bidra, Androth, Kalpeni, and Minicoy. Some of these islands have fewer than 100 residents, contributing to their serene and undisturbed environment.

Lakshadweep, celebrated for its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and environmental conservation efforts, enforces strict guidelines for visitors to preserve its unique ecosystem. This commitment has established Lakshadweep as an eco-friendly and distinctive destination.
