Dogs In Heat – Can Your Pup Handle Oklahoma’s Summer?

Oklahoma summers are brutal and can be hard for even native Okies. After shedding almost all your layers as publicly allowed, those 90 to 100 degree temperatures make  basic tasks a chore. Imagine for a moment that you weren't able to shed those layers – how do you think you'd cope?

For many animals in Oklahoma, the summer is just as dangerous for them as it can be for humans. But after years of breeding and adapting, some breeds can do more with the heat than just stand it. According to purewow.com, here are the top 10 dog breeds able to withstand Oklahoma's heat.

1. Australian Cattle Dog

If an animal can survive in Australia, it's almost guaranteed to do the same in Oklahoma. This breed's short hair coat and high level of energy and prey drive make it the perfect working dog that can keep up with its herd even in the hottest parts of the day.

2. Australian Kelpie

Another breed from Australia, these pups are known most for their energy – they'll never run out. They thrive in heat and working environments that both give them purpose and push them physically.

3. Australian Terrier

If the folks from down under did anything right, they found almost the perfect combination for dogs to get their jobs done – even in extreme heat; the Australian Terrier breed is no different. Although little, averaging about 17.5 pounds, they work just as hard as the big breeds catching pests like moles and groundhogs. Their wiry hair coat allows for breathability and quick-cooling.

4. Chihuahua

Originally bred from the desert heat in Mexico, Chihuahua's don't just survive the heat – they thrive in it. Their thin coats and moderate activity make them great partners for road-trips and one-on-one adventures during the summer.

5. Ibizan Hound

Spain and Egypt – what do they have in common? Both places were responsible for creating the Ibizan Hound and their ability to withstand heat while blowing off steam chasing rabbits and other small rodents.

6. Italian Greyhound

Seeing this breed in Oklahoma more than likely means they're off to hunt – most of the time their prey being coyotes. Their slender bodies, thin coats and durable physique make their “coursing” hunting style a literal breeze – up to 35 mph to be exact.

7. American Water Spaniel

Water makes the hottest places bearable, maybe that's why this breed loves it so much? Webbed feet and water-resistant double coats make the American Water Spaniel perfect for hot climates like Oklahoma.

8. American Hairless Terrier

It's hard to overheat if they have no hair – but this also means they can't protect their skin from direct sunlight. American Hairless Terriers may handle the heat, but they are prone to sunburn and shouldn't be out longer than necessary.

9. Border Collie

Among the many working breeds, Border Collies are known for their never-ending work ethic and drive. Don't underestimate these guys – they'll run to get the job done and more just for the fun of doing it.

10. Whippet

Although this breed was originally bred from the chilly temps in England, short hair and deep chest cavities allow this breed to soak up the sun and enjoy it just fine. Although there aren't many in Oklahoma, they are still known as a low-maintenance and easy breed for all owners.

The most important thing to remember is that every animal is different. No matter the breed, purebred or mutt, keep a close eye on your pups. Make sure they have a constant source of fresh water and the ability to escape direct sunlight.
