Kottayam: While Malayalees across Kerala celebrate Onam, a family in Peroor has ensured that their beloved pets also partake in the festivities. Dogs named Kunjan, Karumban, Appu, Poppy, and several others enjoyed a special Onasadya prepared just for them.
The pets were treated to a hearty meal that included rice, pappad, ‘pedigree' stir-fry (upperi), and chicken sauce pickle. This special feast was prepared by Peroor residents Jayakumar and Sharmila.
Typically kept in cages, the dogs were brought into the house for this unique Onam meal. Their five-coloured cat also joined the dogs for the feast, which was served on banana leaves in the sit-out area of their home. Payasam was shared with those who came to witness the event. Staff, doctors, and volunteers from the Ettumanoor Veterinary Hospital were present to observe this ‘Dog Onam.’
Jayakumar and Sharmila treat their pets as family members. The couple has adopted 15 dogs and 20 cats, many of whom were abandoned, sick, or victims of abuse. Dr. P. Biju, a senior veterinary doctor and founder of ‘Friends of Animals,' supports them by providing free medical treatment and care for these animals.
Among their pets are street dogs as well as breeds like German Shepherds, Dachshunds, and Pomeranian crossbreeds. Those interested in adopting a pet are encouraged to contact the family.
Jayakumar, a former auto-rickshaw driver, completed training to capture stray dogs 12 years ago. Although Sharmila was initially hesitant about her husband's decision to care for so many animals, she eventually became his biggest supporter. Their children also assist in the care of the animals.
