Have you ever wanted to adopt a dog without paying any fees? Well, you’re in luck.
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is running the “Mass Saves” program for all dogs aged one-year and older. The program entails waiving all fees for dog adoptions.
“Making space in all of the coalition shelters is vitally important, as it allows us to collectively help more local stray and surrendered pets,” MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection Mike Keiley stated in a release. “Plus, we know that the formula to help dogs most in need right now is combining increased behavior support with reducing time in shelters, so we have the keys to be successful and want to get to work right away.”
Here’s what to know if you’re looking to add a new member to your family.
How long is the Mass Saves program running?
It started July 15, and will run through Sunday, July 21.
What shelters are participating in the program?
According to the MSPCA, you can adopt fee-free dogs at MSPCA Adoption Centers in Boston, Methuen, Cape Cod, and Northeast Animal Shelter as well as Berkshire Humane Society, Dakin Humane Society, Thomas J O’Connor Adoption Center, Worcester Animal Rescue League, Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts, and Lowell Humane Society.
What’s the current situation with shelters in Massachusetts?
The MSPCA explained that “a large drop in adoptions nationwide has resulted in an overpopulation of dogs living in US shelters. Our adoption centers are at 90% capacity.”
How can I see the dogs that are available right away?
The MSPCA noted you can view our adoptable dogs online. Dogs eligible for the adoptathon will be indicated by a star on their profile. Log onto www.mspca.org/adoption.
