An attack on one of his cats forced a Dover Township pet owner to shoot a dog Monday.

According to Northern York County Regional Police, the attack occurred around 4:45 p.m. in the 4500 block of West Canal Road.

Police said the man called authorities after the dog, a 2-year-old Alaskan malamute, allegedly came onto his property and began chasing his cats. As the man was waiting for police to arrive, the dog allegedly attacked one of the cats and had it in his mouth and was shaking it. At that point, police said, the man fired multiple shots at the dog, striking it several times.

Officers and the dog’s owner were able to locate the wounded dog after it wandered off in the 4400 block of West Canal Road and transported to a veterinarian, but the dog died from its injuries.

The cat’s owner told police that he had reported unconfined dogs numerous times, but it was the first time one attacked one of his animals.

According to Pennsylvania law, any person may kill any dog which he sees in the act of pursuing or wounding or killing any domestic animal, wounding or killing other dogs, cats or household pets, or pursuing, wounding or attacking human beings, whether or not the dog is licensed.

No charges will be filed in the case, police said.
