Dozens of dogs being evacuated from Choctaw animal rescue after morning fire

CHOCTAW, OKLA. (KOKH) — Emergency crews are responding to a fire at a dog rescue in Choctaw Tuesday morning.

Flames and smoke were seen coming from Fur Ever Friends Rescue & Doggie Day Care near Henney Road and E Reno Avenue.

The smoke plume could be seen at least 8 miles away.

Choctaw Police, the Choctaw Fire Department, and the Nicoma Fire Department are responding.

Firefighters have to use water tankers because it's in a rural area.

One volunteer with the rescue said a barn was destroyed.

It housed some of the animals and all the food, leashes, and supplies for the dogs.

Officials report that trucks are coming to transport dozens of dogs that were at the shelter.

The rescue's owner told police she noticed a floodlight flickering, and then saw smoke and flames.

Police report the owner put herself at risk trying to save as many dogs as she could and got smoke inhalation in the process.

As of 9:20 a.m., the fire was still active.

It's not clear how many dogs might be injured, but officials say the owner's effort saved the majority of the dogs and there is a minimal amount of losses.

The cause of the fire is also not known right now.

The rescue is accepting donations at the Bob Moore Subaru in Edmond.

A friend of the owner said they need anything and everything from food, treats, collars, blankets, and pet cleaning supplies.

Those with the rescue said cash donations are also appreciated.
