Dozens of dogs rescued from raging Larch Creek wildfire by Oregon Humane Society

More than a dozen dogs living in rural Wasco County were rescued from the flames of the Larch Creek wildfire, the Oregon Humane Society says.

The OHS says they were contacted by the Dalles Police Department's Animal Control Officer about the dogs, who were living in a remote area of the county that was affected by the blaze.

Working with the Columbia Gorge Humane Society, the team rescued the dogs and transported them to OHS’ new Rescue Center.

The OHS explains that its Rescue Center includes flexible space that can accommodate an influx of pets from crisis situations.

Last August, the building was used to receive close to 100 cats from the Maui Humane Society after the devastating wildfires. More recently, the space was used to receive 60 dogs from Josephine and Jackson counties after their shelters were experiencing a capacity crisis.

The Larch Creek pups are currently receiving care, and the OHS says they are not expected to be ready for adoption for at least a week.
