Mello, the dog abandoned by her owner this summer outside of the Humane Society of Ocean City, found her ‘fur'ever home on Wednesday, thanks to the Humane Society of Ocean City.

A story that received considerable attention at the time focused on the problem of dogs being dumped in South Jersey, but it has reached a happy ending.

The Fourth ‘Dumped' Dog in a Month at the Humane Society of Ocean City

It's a little after midnight, Aug. 1, when a man and his dog appear on the surveillance camera at the Humane Society of Ocean City.

The man bent down and grabbed his dog's leash, tying it around the leg of a bench in the yard, and then quickly walked away. He didn't say goodbye to his pet and he didn't look back.

The dog looks after him with a confused stare as the man disappears into the night.

The dog waited there– alone and afraid — until a police officer found him hours later.

A note left behind by the dog dumper asks that the shelter please take care the the dog because he can no longer do it.

Shelter Workers Wonder Why

At the time, many people came to the defense of the man who abandoned the dog, saying the family probably couldn't afford the animal and at least he left her where she would receive good care.

The workers at South Jersey's shelters, like the Humane Society of Ocean City, were more concerned about how someone could just leave a family member tied to a bench in the middle of the night and walk away forever.

If we say we love them so much, then why are people dumping animals at a record pace!? This is the 4th dog that has been dumped in our shelter in just the last 30 days and very sadly, our story is not very unique. Just talk to anyone at shelters in Atlantic, Cape May, Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem, etc, etc, Counties.

Mello Gets a New Home with a Loving Owner

I received this happy message Wednesday night from Phil at the Humane Society of Ocean City. Mello the dog has a good new home!

A “lite”feel good story(that didn't start out feeling so good)

Thank you Eddie Davis and all your listeners @lite96.9 for the special spotlight on our story!

Mello was sadly left outside tied to one of our benches on August 1st in the middle of the night. She was left with a note saying how they couldn’t take care of her anymore, that she is a one year old pit-bull and that she’s a love bug (which is so true).

Sad and confused, she sat there in the dark alone until one of our animal control officers came to her rescue and brought her inside our shelter.

Being left by her owner didn’t stop her from being a cheerful and  sweet pup. Always greeting us with her big pitty smile!

Thanks to you Eddie, our community and our followers who shared Mello and her story, we were able to find her the loving and happy “fur”ever home that she so deserves.

While we don’t always understand the circumstances people are put in, it's hard to find compassion for their actions . There are correct ways to go about surrendering an animal. We as a society need to take the responsibility of owning a pet seriously and understand the commitment to this life that you are bringing into your home.
