INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Nearly 20 people and more than a dozen pets are safe after a fire broke out early Monday morning at an apartment complex on the north side of Indianapolis.
Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched just after 12:15 a.m. to a fire on Antique Court at the Edison at Meridian Hills apartment complex. That’s near the intersection of 64th Street and Spring Mill Road.
IFD says there were “multiple calls to 911 reporting the fire with additional reports of people trapped on balconies.”
One person jumped from a balcony while everyone else made it out of the building on their own, firefighters say.
The fire was under control in about an hour. A dozen apartments were affected by fire, smoke, water, or utility shutoff, according to IFD.
Thirteen adults, five children, 12 cats, two dogs, and a turtle were displaced by the fire.
Apartment management is working with IFD Victim Assistance to find housing for the affected residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
