EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso Animal Services is helping reunite lost pets with their families by hosting free microchip clinics as part of its “Straylight Savings” initiative.

According to a statement from El Paso Animal Services, the “Straylight Savings” initiative, encourages pet owners to ensure their pets are microchipped and all contact information is up to date.

These measures can significantly reduce the number of pets entering the shelter system and improve the likelihood of a happy reunion, according to the El Paso Animal Service.

The statement also noted that the shelter took in over 23,000 lost pets last year, many of which arrived without a microchip or with outdated contact information, complicating efforts to return them to their owners.

To help reduce these discrepancies Resource Rover Team has collaborated with El Paso Animal Services to host several free microchip clinics in March.

The clinics will be held at various locations, including:

  • Mutts Canine Cantina on March 17
  • Head Start Center on March 22
  • PetSmart at the Fountains on March 27
  • and Fox Plaza on March 29

Microchips will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, with no limit on the number of pets per household.

Pets must be at least six weeks old. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers.

For those needing to update their pet's microchip information, El Paso Animal Services advises pet owners to have their pets scanned at a veterinary clinic, any El Paso Fire Department station, or at one of the free microchipping events.

Owners can then enter the microchip number at PetMicrochipLookup.org to find the manufacturer and update their contact information.

Registration is free at 24PetWatch.com, and additional security can be added by entering the microchip data into the PetcoLoveLost.org database.
