The Abilene State Park, which is located just outside Buffalo Gap, Texas, has been a favorite West Texas destination since opening in 1934. Known for camping, hiking, stargazing, and its famously fun swimming pool, the park is now offering a unique Memorial Day experience you’ll never forget.
Let’s get the bad news out of the way. My good friend Candyce Johnson, Assistant Superintendent at the park, confirmed that the historic swimming pool will not open this summer. The good news? It’s getting a full renovation and will be back better than ever.

Here’s the exciting part. This Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the Abilene State Park, Texas Parks and Wildlife, park rangers, and the All Kind Animal Shelter are teaming up for a special event: “Hiking With a Homeless Dog.”
At 10 a.m., participants can meet adoptable dogs at the park, pick out a leash-walking buddy, and hit the scenic trails with park wardens leading the way. Halfway through the hike, you’ll have the chance to switch dogs and see which furry companion fits your lifestyle best.

Before you hit the trail, here’s an important reminder from Texas Parks and Wildlife at Abilene State Park:
“In direct sunlight in 80-degree weather, concrete and asphalt can reach temperatures well over 100 degrees. That's really hot on your pup's paws! If you're ever unsure if the ground is safe for them to walk on, try holding your hand on the surface while counting to 5-Mississippi. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your fuzzy friend.”
After the hike, adoptions will take place back at the park. Even better? If you’re participating in the “Hiking With a Homeless Dog” event, entry into Abilene State Park is free for you and your family.
Bring bottled water, snacks for yourself, and a few dog treats for your potential new best friend. Under the shade of the giant oak trees, you just might meet your perfect hiking partner for life.
