One of my biggest fears as a pet parent was my dog getting into a situation that they can't get out of and I can't help.

Fortunately, I have never had that happen in all the time I have been a pet parent but so many people can't say the same. This time of year one of the biggest problems can be pets wandering out onto the ice. A pond, a lake, or even a river.

Why do You Call For Help if People or Pets Get Trapped or Fall Through Ice

If your pet ever gets in a situation especially if it involves ice always call for help. Ice rescues can be dangerous. Our Hudson Valley Fire departments practice all winter long on how to get people, pets, and even wildlife out of situations that involve being stuck on ice or in water after falling through the ice.

The Esopus Fire Department and Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad received a call on Friday that a dog was stuck on the ice in the Hudson River. The call was for an area near the Black Creek Reserve off Winding Brook Road.

According to the press release from the Esopus Fire Department an Esopus resident was hiking with three dogs when one of them “Maya” got away and went out onto the ice. Responders to the scene were able to use their training and equipment to successfully get Maya back on shore within 19 minutes of the call for help.

Professionals in this situation will have training and equipment that can help keep everyone safe while hopefully rescuing the person or animal in distress. Maya was evaluated by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance crew on the scene before heading home.

The Dive Team from Ulster Hose Co. #5 had also been requested to help but fortunately were canceled once the dog was safe on sure. The Esopus Fire Department was assisted by the Town of Esopus Fire Department and the New York State Police.

While Maya was being rescued off the ice in the Hudson River the Esopus Fire Department also responded to a Carbon Monoxide call on Fawn Meadows Court. Fortunately, that call turned out well too once the heating system was shut down and the house was ventilated. Along with the Esopus Fire Department, the Port Ewen Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Esopus Ambulance Squad were on the call.

Many Hudosn Valley Fire Departments and Ambulance squads are made up of volunteers. Stop into your local department today and find out how you can help.
