It should come as no surprise Babe is top of the list.
The fuzzy pink pig stole the hearts of movie-watchers everywhere when Babe was released in 1995.
Thanks to the film, pleas for a dog for Christmas quickly became pleas for a pig with a collar, because who wouldn’t want a pet as loyal and sweet as Babe?
Interestingly, American actor James Cromwell, who plays Farmer Arthur Hoggett in the film, has been a long-time animal rights activist and humanitarian.
Cromwell had been a vegetarian since the ’70s, but after filming Babe and spending so much time with his adorable pink-furred co-star, he went vegan.
At 82, Cromwell is still vegan and very much at the centre of social change and animal rights activism.
In 2022, he teamed up with the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) organisation to call for an end to the mutilation of pigs in medical training.
The actor said he was “horrified” to learn of the practice, saying he’d had the “privilege of witnessing and experiencing pigs’ intelligence and inquisitive personalities” while filming Babe.
