Claim : Fauci called to kill pet cats to stop bird flu!
People are sharing an article (archive) by The People’s Voice (formerly NewsPunch), which claims that Dr. Anthony Fauci said that pet cats should be killed to stop the bird flu pandemic!
Here is an excerpt of the (intentionally?) rambling and confusing article. Feel free to skip to the next section for the facts!
Fauci Says Millions of Pet Cats Must Be Slaughtered to Fight Bird Flu Pandemic
Anthony Fauci, the former NIH kingpin has slithered back into the spotlight, this time with his sights set on your furry companions.

Truth : Fauci did not call to kill pet cats to stop bird flu!
This is yet another example of fake news created / promoted by The People’s Voice, and here are the reasons why…
Dr. Fauci did not call to kill pet cats to stop bird flu!
Let me just start by saying that Dr. Anthony Fauci did not call for millions of pet cats to be killed to stop the bird flu pandemic!
If Dr. Fauci ever made such a shocking statement, it would been widely reported by reputable media outlets, and sparked widespread criticism and outrage. Needless to say – none of that happened, because it was completely made-up!
Unsurprisingly, The People’s Voice article did not provide any evidence Dr. Fauci said that pet cats should be killed to stop the bird flu!
In fact, the entire rambling article does not mention, even once, when or where Dr. Fauci ever said, or suggested, that pet cats should be killed to fight the bird flu! So why should you believe it???
There is no bird flu pandemic
The People’s Voice article claimed that Dr. Fauci said that pet cats should be killed to fight the bird flu pandemic. However, there is currently no bird flu pandemic.
The H5N1 avian influenza virus has been causing significant outbreaks, with the current US outbreak beginning in late March 2024. So there is concern that it could lead to a pandemic. But that has not occurred… yet.
If The People’s Voice cannot even get this right, why should you believe anything they post???

Dr. Fauci was not in charge of NIH
The People’s Voice article also claimed that Dr. Fauci was in charge of the NIH. That’s not accurate.
Dr. Anthony Fauci served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022, before he became the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden.
Dr. Fauci notably was offered the position of director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) several times, but declined each time. He was never in charge of the NIH.
If The People’s Voice cannot even get this right, why should you believe anything they post???
The People’s Voice is known for fake news
The People’s Voice is the current name for NewsPunch, which possibly changed its name because its brand has been so thoroughly discredited after posting numerous shocking but fake stories.
Founded as Your News Wire in 2014, it was rebranded as NewsPunch in November 2018, before becoming The People’s Voice. A 2017 BuzzFeed report identified NewsPunch as the second-largest source of popular fake news on Facebook that year.
Its articles have been regularly debunked as fake news, so you should think twice about sharing anything from NewsPunch / The People’s Voice. Here are some of its fake stories that I fact checked earlier:
