A family’s heartbreak turned to relief when one of their missing pets was found alive days after a massive explosion destroyed their home in Virginia.
On October 15, a blast obliterated the house shared by two families in Haymarket, Virginia. While the exact cause is still being investigated, initial reports suggest that a contractor hit a natural gas line underground, according to Prince William County Fire officials.
Thankfully, all four adults and two children inside the home escaped without injuries. However, one family was crushed by the disappearance of their three pets, fearing they had died in the explosion.
“Nothing’s going to bring them back unless somehow they made it out alive, which I hope they did, but who knows where they are,” resident Jarrett Struniak told NBC Washington.
Six days later, hope was rekindled. Prince William County Fire and Rescue returned to the scene after someone heard barking coming from the rubble. Firefighters arrived and listened closely, detecting a dog trapped beneath the collapsed structure. After 20 minutes of carefully moving through debris and enticing the dog with treats, they succeeded in freeing her.
The rescued dog was Brandy, a brindle pitbull and one of the family’s missing pets. Despite enduring an explosion and nearly a week under the wreckage, she was in remarkably good shape and “showed her happiness of being freed by rapid tail wagging.”
The firefighters were amazed by the unexpected rescue. “Usually when we do make pet rescues and people rescues, it’s at the time of the incident,” Lt. Mark Waldrop of Prince William County Fire and Rescue told NBC Washington. “To go back six days later and get the dog out was a great feeling.”
“Makes you feel good about your job when you do stuff like this.”

Brandy was joyfully reunited with her family, offering a glimmer of happiness after their devastating loss.
There’s no deeper sorrow than believing a cherished pet is gone forever, so it’s heartwarming that this family got Brandy back thanks to this incredible rescue.
