NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Middle Tennessee family is grieving after their beloved dog was run over and killed by a trash truck driver.

The Cannon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which happened April 13 at a rural property in the county.

Tasha Locks and her daughter, Aspen, were going through their usual morning routine when the tragedy happened. Tasha had just let her dogs out when she suddenly heard one of them screeching.

“I ran outside, and this big truck came around the corner, and I know it was the waste management company,” Tasha said. “He stuck his head out the window and just yelled, ‘Go get the trash can’ because he knew it was in my shop, which was like 500 feet away. And I yelled, okay, okay, just let me get my dogs in…”

Moments later, she saw her dog, Ares, lying lifeless in the driveway.

“I just was kind of in shock,” she said. “So I ran towards the driver and got in front of his truck, and I just screamed, ‘You killed my dog. You killed my dog.’ And he didn’t say anything.”

Locks said their home is protected by a gated entrance, and she never imagined something like this could happen. According to a police report, the driver told officers he honked in the driveway, then “pulled a pin” to open the gate himself. He claimed one of the dogs began running toward his truck. Then he ran it over.

“I have two other dogs. She was like the center. She was kind of the alpha female. And I think that’s the loss we’re feeling,” Tasha said.

Ares was more than a pet to the family. She was a companion and a protector. Tasha says she adopted Ares as another mode of protection after her home was broken into. Even though Ares was only 2 years old when she died, Tasha said they had an unbreakable bond.

“She was just a part of each of the dogs and the connection between them and me and stuff, and so it’s just hard to walk around my property because she was always with me,” Tasha added.

The driver, identified as Lee Hennessee, has been charged with vandalism and criminal trespassing. He is the owner of Waste Services LLC, based in Manchester and is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.

WSMV has reached out to Waste Services LLC for comment, but has not heard back.
