A family has been left heartbroken after discovering their beloved dog was struck by a train and then dumped in a shallow grave beside the tracks.

The six-year-old rescue pooch, Tammy, was tragically hit by a train at Sydenham Station, in Sydney's inner west, after running free from her home in Newtown on September 23, shortly after being adopted.

However, after the micro-chipped dog died Tammy's owners were not contacted and spent the following weeks searching for the dog.

They had no idea workers for Sydney Trains simply dug a shallow grave and buried her.

Anne-Marie Curry of Arthur & Co. Pet Detectives, who tracked down her temporary resting place, described Tammy's case as hitting ‘harder than others'.

Ms Curry took to the Pet Detectives Facebook page to notify locals of the missing dog with numerous potential sightings flooding into the page.

One local wrote they had seen a deceased dog that resembled Tammy near Sydenham Station on September 26.

While investigating the tip-off, Ms Curry received confirmation that a dog of Tammy's description had been killed near the station yet was hindered by several ‘road blocks' from staff.

However, Tammy's body was able to be exhumed and placed in a box to be collected after Ms Curry got in contact with a senior official at Sydney Trains.

‘The team at Southern Cross Veterinary Clinic immediately collected the box with [Tammy's] body on behalf of us,' she told Yahoo.

After the veterinarian team found the ID chips on the dog, they were able to confirm that Tammy was the dog that had been killed.

‘We hope you can now Rest in Eternal Peace,' a post to the Arthur & Co. Pet Detectives page reads.

Numerous Facebook users were devastated to hear of Tammy's passing, with many thanking Ms Curry and the Arthur & Co. Pet Detectives for their hard work.

‘A sad and tragic outcome, but an amazing effort from you to provide this closure for the family and hold Sydney Trains to account,' one user wrote.

‘Please follow up with Sydney Trains to ensure they never bury always scan first,' a second wrote.

‘I applaud them in a sense though that they took time and thoughtfully laid to rest but change is necessary for worried fur baby parents.'

Sydney Trains Chief Executive, Matt Longland, extended his condolences to Tammy's family in a statement to Daily Mail Australia, saying ‘(Sydney Trains) are saddened to hear the news about Tammy'.

‘Sydney Trains' staff assisted in returning Tammy to her owner, providing closure for the family and the community.

‘We understand this is a sensitive topic and we will continue to work with the local council, vets and the RSPCA to improve our methods for dealing with deceased pets found with identification in the rail corridor.'
