MEDINA, Ohio — When our college student daughter returned to the nest during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we weren’t sure what to expect.
Not only were Mom, Dad and adult daughter going to have to coexist in tight quarters, but so were our two cats and Maddie’s recently adopted feline, Finnegan.
Finnegan, then a 1-year-old Russian Blue mix who reportedly “didn’t get along well” with other pets, arrived understandably traumatized from his flight from Colorado.
I didn’t think that would bode well for an introduction to Elmo, an elderly and grumpy black cat, and our sweet Stoop Cat, a formerly feral kitten who has grown into a lovable lap cat.
But Stoop Cat being Stoop Cat, he quickly made friends with Finn. It wasn’t long before the two were inseparable: They played together, groomed each other and cuddled together, their limbs entwined and heads resting on each other’s shoulders.

They are totally in love with one another. So it was with a heavy heart that we — especially Stoop Cat — had to bid farewell to Finnegan when our daughter moved out and took him with her to her new home in North Carolina.
But never fear: Finn has made the trip home to Ohio a number of times since. In fact, he is currently enjoying a lengthy holiday stay with us as our daughter comes and goes for work trips and friends’ weddings and such. He’ll be here until the New Year!
Stoop Cat and Finnegan are back to their happy, loving-on-each-other selves. And Elmo still hates them both!
