Sealord is welcoming a grant of more than $2 million over four years to help it develop and bring to market new products from fish waste.
Sealord is welcoming a grant of more than $2 million over four years to help it develop and bring to market new products from fish waste.
The money comes from the Ministry for Primary Industry’s Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund.
It will support work under way to develop garden fertiliser and pet food products.
Stu Yorston, its manager for business development and sustainability, says the Maori and Japanese-owned company already uses over 99 percent of the fish biomass it harvests.
It wants to develop new products with better yields and higher prices than fish meal, which is the main by-product after filleting.
Sealord will accelerate the launch of Sealord Naked, an organic range of garden fertiliser that will be available from retailers from mid- September.
It’s working on a replacement for synthetic fertilisers in viticulture, horticulture and even golf courses.
The funding agreement will also enable Sealord to develop a range of ingredients for pet food manufacturers to be launched in 2025, as well as produce Sealord branded pet food in 2026.
