The festive season is a time for joy, family, and celebration. For many of us, our pets are integral members of our families, and including them in the festivities enhances the warmth and joy of the season. However, it’s important to ensure that all the fun and excitement remain safe for our furry companions. Here’s how you can celebrate with your pets in a way that’s both fun and secure, with insights from two experts in the field of pet care—Dr Jadhav Aditya Sudhir, Veterinary Product Executive, Drools Pet Food, and Dr Deepak Saraswat, Head Veterinarian, Zigly.

Pet-Friendly Decorations: Safety First

Decorating your home is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the festive season. However, many decorations can pose hazards to curious pets, especially dogs and cats. According to Dr Jadhav Aditya Sudhir, “Pets might see new decorations as toys, which can lead to potential accidents or health risks if they ingest items like tinsel, ribbons, or string lights.” He advises opting for pet-friendly décor by avoiding fragile ornaments, small items, or anything with sharp edges.

Instead, choose decorations made from non-toxic materials like fabric or paper and place them out of reach. If you’re using candles, make sure they’re positioned where pets can’t knock them over, reducing the risk of burns or accidental fires.

Dr Deepak Saraswat adds, “Fairy lights, candles, and earthen lamps can pose hazards to pets. It’s important to be cautious about where these items are placed, especially if your pet is prone to knocking things over or chewing on wires.”

Festive Treats and Meals: Keep It Nutritious

Food is central to most festive celebrations, and while it can be tempting to share your treats with your pets, many human foods are toxic to them. Dr Sudhir emphasizes the importance of offering pet-specific meals, “Chocolate, grapes, and certain nuts can be harmful to pets. Drools offers a range of nutritious and delicious treats designed specifically for pets, ensuring they can enjoy festive feasting safely.”

To ensure your pet can partake in the fun without compromising their health, consider creating a festive-themed meal using Drools products or other pet-safe treats. This way, they can enjoy a tasty and nutritious meal that suits their dietary needs.

Dressing Up Your Pets: Comfort is Key

Dressing up pets in festive outfits is always fun, but it’s essential to prioritize their comfort. Dr. Sudhir advises, “Choose costumes made from soft, breathable fabrics, and make sure they’re not too tight or restrictive. Avoid costumes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed.”

Before dressing your pet, let them get familiar with the outfit, and never force them into wearing something they seem uncomfortable with. Always supervise them while they’re dressed to ensure they aren’t showing signs of distress.

Interactive Playtime: Engage and Entertain

With more free time during the festive season, there’s an opportunity for increased playtime with your pets. Dr. Sudhir highlights the benefits of keeping pets mentally and physically stimulated, “Interactive play, whether with toys or new tricks, provides physical exercise and helps reduce boredom-related behaviors. You could also create a pet-friendly scavenger hunt to keep things festive.”

Using festive-themed toys or DIY games can make playtime even more fun. Rewarding your pet with treats during playtime can enhance the bonding experience, ensuring that your time together is not just entertaining but also beneficial for their health.

Creating a Safe Space: A Sanctuary Amidst the Celebrations

Festive gatherings can be overwhelming for pets due to the influx of guests, loud noises, and unfamiliar activities. Dr. Saraswat advises pet owners to “set up a quiet and comfortable space for your pet to retreat from the excitement. Include their bed, favorite toys, and a fresh supply of water.”

He also recommends using calming aids, such as soothing music or noise-cancelling gear, especially if your pet is sensitive to loud noises like fireworks or loud music.

Including Pets in Family Traditions: Making Memories Together

Pets are part of the family, so including them in your festive traditions creates lasting memories. Dr. Sudhir suggests, “Whether it’s posing for family photos, participating in a gift exchange, or being part of a holiday video, pets can be incorporated into many festive activities.”

You could even create a new tradition centered around your pet, such as a festive walk or a special treat-making session, further reinforcing their place as a valued family member.

### Avoiding Loud Noises: Minimizing Stress

Many festive events include fireworks or loud music, which can be incredibly stressful for pets. **Dr. Saraswat** reminds pet owners, “Fireworks and loud noises can cause stress to pets. Consider using noise-cancelling gear or playing calming music to keep them relaxed during these events.”

By creating a quiet, safe space and minimizing exposure to loud noises, you can ensure that your pet remains calm and stress-free during the celebrations.

A Safe and Happy Pet Means a Merrier Celebration

Pets deserve the same love and attention during the festive season. With some simple adjustments to your celebrations—whether through pet-safe decorations, nutritious treats, interactive play, or creating a safe space—you can ensure your pets enjoy the festivities safely and happily.

By keeping your pets in mind throughout the celebrations, you’ll not only protect them from potential hazards but also strengthen your bond, making the festive season even more special for everyone involved.
