Find out Kentucky’s favorite dog breeds based on national surveys


Dogs are known as a person’s best friend, and the beloved fluff balls just so happen to be the most popular pet in the United States. According to 2021 statistics from the United States Census Bureau, 63.8 million households had at least one pet, which was nearly 50% of those surveyed. Of these households, 49 million owned one or more dogs.

These four-legged companions have taken the forefront of the pet industry, but what breeds are typically preferred over others? More specifically, what dog breeds are most popular in Kentucky?

These two nationally known outlets are presenting different results:

What is Kentucky's most popular breed?

According to a publication from the U.S. News & World Report on Jan. 22, the top breed ranked breed in Kentucky is a Chihuahua. The other breeds placed in the top five were Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzus, Goldendoodles and German Shepherds.

However, Forbes Advisor reported some different results. Published on Dec. 6, 2023, the survey found German Shepherds to be Kentucky’s favorite breed. The breed also ranked second nationally after Australian Shepherds. The data, which surveyed 10,000 dog owners nationally, German Shepherds were selected as the favorite breed in 16 states.

“Well-known as a highly trainable and intelligent dog, German shepherds ranked as America’s second favorite dog breed…,” according to the article. “This breed is loyal and known as the most common breed to serve as search and rescue dogs and police K-9s, as well as aids in the military.”

According to 2024 pet ownership statistics from the World Population Review, 64.1% of Kentuckian households owned pets. Of these pet owners, 46.5% had dogs and 32.2% had cats.

According to the data presented by the U.S. News & World Report, the top five breeds nationally are Chihuahuas, French Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Shih Tzus.

On the Forbes list, the top five are Australian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
