Valentine’s Day has passed, but Osceola County still has a way for you to find a companion—a four-legged kind—and do it affordably.
For the second year in a row, Osceola County Animal Services is running its special Furr-Ever adoption promotion.
Through the end of the month, you can take home a dog or cat from the facility on Old Canoe Creek road for just $14. That’s about a fifth of the usual adoption fee of $70-90.
The price comes with spaying or neutering, micro-chipping and, while supplies last, a complimentary pet carrier or crate to take home along with their new “Furr-Ever” Valentine companion.
Osceola County Commission Brandon Arrington and his wife Kristen are rescue pet owners themselves and are proponents of the February adoption promotion.
“We don’t shop, we adopt. We’ve done it with all of our cats and dogs,” Brandon Arrington said. “We encourage people to do the same. People don’t realize how many animals are euthanized every year, not just here in our community but across the country. We want to make sure every animal has a good home, and help people be the best pet owners they can be.
“With as many people living single these days—I think it’s up to about 30 percent—what better why to alleviate some of the mental health issues people have than have the companionship of a dog or cat. So, for me, it’s a dual effort.”
Last year this program resulted in the adoption of 64 cats and 70 dogs. This year, Animal Services is also offering specials on micro-chipping residents’ pets—and that’s not just for dogs and cats.
“We’ve done rabbits, ferrets … we want to make sure if you have a pet you cherish, it can be found quickly if it goes missing,” Arrington said.
